Programme Introduction

Exploring Human Stories from Dense Living Spaces

Glasgow-based Singaporean theatre-maker Ramesh Meyyappan embarks on a creative research journey exploring the everyday lives of people in dense living spaces. Taking Quarry Bay’s evocative Parker Estate – a site rich with urban memories known locally as the Monster Building – as a starting point, the project looks at notions of space, community and neighbourhood relationships.

In a series of visual and physical theatre workshops, Ramesh works with local Deaf participants, and artists with backgrounds in theatre or movements, to explore the central question: When sound is removed from communication, how can the body, gesture and visual cues become the language of storytelling?

Drawing on improvisation, character building, physical training, visual storytelling and real-life narratives, participants transform fragments of daily life into characters and scenarios on stage, developing their own unique performance languages through observation and interaction. The project concludes with a public demonstration and sharing session around the theatrical possibilities sparked by different modes of expression.

The Jockey Club “No Limits” Education and Community Programme nurtures artists of different abilities and provides opportunities for individuals of all communities to participate in inclusive arts projects.
