Hide-and-Seek by ErGao Dance Production Group
From blind massage to dance – a new look at the creative potential of those who are visually impaired
Hide-and-Seek is an original dance performance exploring new perspectives on the creative potential of visually impaired individuals, presented by Wang Zeyu and ErGao Dance Production Group.
Like many visually impaired people in mainland China, Wang left his hometown to work at a blind massage parlour in the big city. Seeking a more creative outlet for his skills, he joined an art group promoting inclusive arts and began experimenting with tactile and bodycentred creations. An encounter with choreographer ErGao saw the birth of Hide-and-Seek. Inspired by real-life and fictional stories of the employment and migration experiences of individuals with visual impairments, the work blends the playfulness of a childhood game, the fluid gestures of massage and contemporary choreography, images, sound and texts, to create a unique, immersive dance experience.
Specially commissioned for No Limits 2025, Hide-and-Seek is an interactive, cross-disciplinary performance developed by Guangzhou-based visually impaired performer Wang Zeyu and choreographer ErGao. The work was created in collaboration with blind massage parlours and organisations for people with visual impairments in China. A video film documenting the creation process, will be screened for free on the Tai Kwun Laundry Steps at Tai Kwun in March, and available online.
ErGao (He Qiwo)
ErGao is a dancer, choreographer, director and curator from Yangjiang, Guangdong. A graduate of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, ErGao later studied Contemporary Performing Art Criticism in Singapore. Since founding ErGao Dance Production Group in 2007, his work has focused on the body as his primary medium and site of artistic inquiry. ErGao employs diverse strategies to illuminate topics relevant to mainland China, dealing with socio-cultural identity, sex and gender through deft manipulation of tone, from absurd to sombre. Recent works examine the mobility of new urban migrants in Chinese society and issues around dance as a public phenomenon. He emphasizes the importance of involving community dance practices and drawing inspiration from daily life for his artistic pursuits, aiming to foster dynamic interactions between performers and audiences.
Theo Wang Zeyu
Guangzhou-based performer Theo Wang Zeyu began his career working in blind massage. He later joined Zhanrong Space, a non-profit organisation that explores the potential of visually impaired individuals and advocates for an accessible and inclusive society. In 2020, with the Tactileye art group, Wang began experimenting with tactile and body-centred creations, employing sound, physical movement, installation, writing and film to address social issues such as physical limitations, gender, multisensory experiences without vision and professional predicaments. In 2023, Wang initiated the Alternative Vision project, documenting his life, and the lives of visually impaired friends, through multisensory experiences and personal perspectives. His commissioned installation artworks have been shown at exhibitions in China and Japan. Wang also facilitates workshops on inclusive arts around China.
